Build a Life-Changing Website Pt 1

May 13th, 2010

There seem to be 3 strategies with designer websites:
1. A super simple template that just shows work.
2. Something branded that has an identity, maybe some cool action script and shows work.
3. A blog with tons of articles, tons of followers, tons of new conversations, tons of ways for people to love you and yes, work.

Guess which one will revolutionize your career and change your life?

With the first two you email your book out to recruiters or meet someone and say, here’s my domain. Check out my portfolio. You go to them.

You’re limited because you can only meet so many people. And cold calling recruiters is a pretty fruitless endeavor.

With the third you create a tribe of people who are passionate about not only your work, but your thinking as well. You have an army working for you while you’re asleep. That tribe shares your work and your thinking all over the web and all of a sudden clients and jobs are finding you (big difference in the type of relationship you have when a client seeks you) from all over the world that you never would have met otherwise.

I’ve given examples of all three types below. Daniel Del Toro is one of those rare guys who chronically does badass work and still remains painfully humble. Hotel Vermillion is my current site (although that will soon be changing.) And I can’t believe how much traffic David Airey gets, how many comments there are on his posts, and the quality of work that just shows up at his door without his having to solicit it.

2. http://hotelvermillion.com
3. http://www.davidairey.com/

Basically this is a sales philosophy. If I have a product, I can only sell it to so many people. But if I hire a team of salesmen, my ceiling goes way up. With a blog, you create a team of people who are happy to sell your work for you to their contacts. If you’re ready to get started, Part 2 delves into the thinking behind your baller new site and Part 3 covers the mechanics.

My vision is to help a whole generation of creatives become great at selling themselves so that great work happens more often. If you’re down with that, please let me know in the comments below.

Faithfully,

Fernando

It’s Erv. Read every article on your blog. Some great stuff. “Get Your Client’s Panties Wet,” an interesting concept. Let me know how that works. My experience has been “Listen to your clients bitch.” But I’m open to change. Speakin’ of change Fernadito, when did you change your banner? Like it. Progress. Keep writing, I’ll keep reading. Erv

I finally got around to reading all three parts of this—great insights. I’m wondering if you have been to Chris Spooner’s blog. I like his description of the evolution of his blog site from playing around to creating significant revenue just by doing what he loved. Check it out if you haven’t— http://www.blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/about

    Cheers!
